A new Linus in time for The Great Pumpkin

Tampa Bay pulled it off-- I will give them credit.
Cloris Leachman is still competing on "Dancing with the Stars".
And Caribou Barbie is pulling of a great Sarah Palin.

There was one profile shot of Ms. Leachman tonight that looked so much like my mother, I was startled but appreciated it. I have a photo of Mom when she was wearing make-up and dressed up and looking so pretty. Cloris reminds me of my mother; and my mother would have loved watching this 82 year old trouper strut her stuff.

I need to get back to strutting myself. At least, tonight Don and I got in a quick walk before it got dark. While we were out we saw The Big Liebowski conducting his evening patrol duty. We saw his 'mom' pull up in the car and I wanted to wait and ask her if she could tell us the cats' names. Don and I weren't sure we really wanted to know their real names, but I couldn't ignore this opportunity.

Mrs. Liebowski was on the sidwalk and I bent down to visit with her. Don introduced himself to 'Mom' whose name is Nikki. Nikki confirmed that the other black and white cat is a female named Oreo. And that The Dude, our Mr. Liebowski is indeed the neighborhood mascot and his name is Linus. Nikki and her roommatees and the two cats actually had just moved to our neighborhood in June, so they, too were new to the neighborhood. Although, you would never know it by the expert way that Linus walks his beat. Nikki said that he is the most mellow cat ever. She even found him sleeping with an errant raccoon one night. We told her that he has become quite our favorite neighbor so far and really appreciate his dedicated service.

People could learn a lot from their furry counterparts. Maybe I should write the equivalent of a Robert Fulghum book about everything I needed to learn I learned from my fur children.

On Friday night, I led my first practtioner meeting since arriving in Chico. Yesterday, was ymy second Board of Trustees meeting and it was... wonderful! Yes, a productive, collaborative and succssful Board meeting.Tomorrow night, I start teaching my first class at church. Teaching "The Edinburgh Lectures" by Judge Thomas Troward is not for the feint-hearted. Troward is one tough cookie to read and to wrap around. It will be a good challenge for us all.

When I got home, our dear friend, John Henke (who drove our moving truck to Chico) was here with a friend as they were stopping by on their way to Oregon. It was wonderful to come home to the smell of good food and laughter. And John hadn't seen the house all unpacked since he was last here two months ago. Don and I so appreciated being able to entertain out of town guests.

Life is good.

Except that "Boston Legal" is on its final season. It is true that David E. Kelley is one of my Hollywood heroes. I learn more about our government and juris prudence from his attorney-turned-writer brilliance. And of course, I so appreciate the acting from a finely-tuned and eccentric cast. Without "West Wing" and "Boston Legal" what's a girl to do??

Guess I will have to occupy myself with things of local color.

Autumn is really happening around Chico. There are colors on the trees around the church that I have never seen in Southern California. These are the colors and images from my autumn daydreams from putting together my favorite jigsaw puzzles a a kid.

Yep, life is good. And no turning into pumpkins around this place.

Lessons from My Dog
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a ride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
When it's in your best interest, always practice obedience.
Let others know when they've invaded your territory.
Take naps and always stretch before rising.
Run, romp, and play daily.
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.
Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
No matter how often you are criticized, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout. Run right back and make friends.

I love hearing of your Joy interacting with your neighbor cat, Mr Liebowski. It reminds me of the passionate mandate behind one of my modern worldly griefs and mindfully activated missions: to overcome the current fearful race consciousness that is encouraging everyone to keep their children and cats from having any freedom to roam the neighborhood because "it's just not safe anymore". Well, we create our communities with our thoughts...

"Gestures are all that I have; sometimes they must be grand in nature. And while I occasionally step over the line and into the world of the melodramatic, it is what I must do in order to communicate clearly and effectively... Oh, how I wish I could speak. How I wish for thumbs!"
