McPheever San Diego

Just got home from the American Idols Concert tour at the Sports Arena here in San Diego.
And well, I am feeling my age. That sounds better than I feel old because I don't feel old, I just don't feel I fit in with this particular concert crowd. And did I mention THAT IT WAS VERY LOUD THERE???

I took John Kurko in honor of Appreciation Day---by the way, I appreciate all of YOU who read and contribute to this blog-- and because he has a crush on Katherine McPhee.

Many of the Pacific Church folks know that Kat's beautiful and talented mother, Peisha McPhee has sung at our church several times and is a friend of mine from L.A. So we had great seats and backstage passes for tonight.

I was really thrilled and proud to see Kat perform. She is so amazingly talented and beautiful (like her Mom!) and has such stage presence. Yet, I found the most enjoyable aspect of the concert for me was more, well, anthropological in a way. I got a kick out of watching the people in the crowd. The kids who are huge Idol fans; the older women who are huge Idol groupies--yes, Jana, I see you and the Claymates are not alone.

American Idol as a TV show has such appeal and the marketing on the show and the subsequent tours, products, promos, etc. is enviable in its approach. It is a phenomenon on it's own. T-shirts, photos, CD's, oh my.
The concert crowds are different than when I used to attend concerts more frequently. Did I mention it WAS LOUDER? And cell phone glow is now replacing the cigarette lighter as the instrument of choice to be appropriately swayed with certain songs. And to think I was concerned that we had brought along a digital camera and the huge sign outside the entrance said no cameras (among other things--like your spiked studded collars or bracelets) were allowed. I am still the 'good girl' at my age and tried to hide the camera so we could sneak it in. Cameras were plentiful and if not, camera cell phones were doing double duty.

Pop Tarts was one of the key sponsors for the tout and they handed out a free new Chocolate Mint Pop Tart after the show. (I didn't eat it but I wanted it anyway). The bathroom lines were still too long for the Women's restrooms. And it made me crazy that there was no recycling anywhere! They can get away with charging $3.50 for a small bottle of water but not have recycling bins for disposal. Do I sound like a grown-up or what?

Speaking of grown-up... tomorrow afternoon, I am meeting up with my two friends from elementary schoo. We are going to meet halfway in Escondido at a Starbucks. Wonder if they go to any concerts???
