At 2:18 yesterday, I celebrated that we are now finally into Autumn.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....
Just that knowledge alone allows me to rally over the searing heat and the hotter temperaments of late.
Last week was difficult at every turn. And I shall not even mention Mercury being splayed into retrograde. Dropped communications, mechanical breakdowns, a power outage (metaphor doesn't allude me there) and overwhelm. Things rose to a fevered-pitch and somehow, we prevailed. For the most part.
There are still the mosquitoes. It seems I am quite the delicacy of late.
Having been up since 4:00 a.m. I was able to get to the PV High School track early enough to do my laps before school started for the day. I love being on the track early in the morning or right at sunset when no one else is around and I can think out loud.
On my way back, the hustle and bustle of students and faculty arriving on campus afforded me that brief glimpse into the window of human behavior. I felt I was a witness to the various scenarios of life going on all around me. Students crossing the street with their backpacks getting ready for a new day. Did they have a test to take today? Would they get to see the boy or girl of their dreams and maybe exchange a hello? The students who are now old enough to drive to school ...thinking about what they might be thinking this fine morning.
Then off to my early shopping visit at CVS to get hydrocortisone cream for the bug bites. The homeopathic stuff has not been effective and I am ready for the chemicals. And then to Starbucks for my breakfast coffee treat.
I was greeted by one of the barristas who recognizes me and we often share small talk. I walked up to the counter, she smiled and immediately handled me two receipts from previous customers who had left them at the register. I was so touched by this small but generous action because she had remembered from one or two of my other visits that I would come in to buy coffee for Don and for myself, and pay separately so that we would each get one of the Summer Treat Receipts. This is a special summer promotion that Starbucks has had that if you make any purchase before 2:00 p.m. you can bring back your receipt after 2:00 p.m. and get a grande cold beverage for just $2.00. Not that I needed the added incentive to return to a Starbucks but I am sucker for coupons and a bargain.
Far be it from me to alert them that we are no longer in summer....
