In this case, it's #24 the batter that hit the Padres into victory last night. Thank you, Brian Giles! What a game last night. It was the kind of game that displays the beauty and the power of baseball in all it's glory. The strategy and artistry that can often get lost in the competition and the headlines of steroids and inflated salaries.
I was the grateful recipient of two tickets--fabulous seats in Toyota Terrace. One of the perks of these seats is that you can order food/beverages and they bring it to you! Didn't know that ahead of time, so we had already eaten and I brought my bottles of water. (Oh-and one of the new Vitalicious Muffins tops for oly 100 calories. YUM. Thanks, Ellie and hungrygirl.com).
It was a beautiful San Diego evening and a game that exemplified the beauty of baseball.
Speaking of baseball and its over-inflated ego and biceps... there was a fabulous editorial piece on Barry Bonds that I highly recommend if you are a baseball fan. It was printed in my favorite magazine, The Week from May 12, 2006 and it was a two-page excerpt from a longer article in ESPN, The Magazine and written by Chuck Klosterman. It is entitled, "Why Barry Bonds Matters" and is so well-written, I can recommend it even if you are not a baseball fan(atic).
And lest you think this is just about baseball... here's the metaphysical aspect.
Turns out that my date and I ended up sitting in unique seats next to people with whom we shared a common bond. My date is from Michigan and lived for awhile in Detroit; as did his seat mate; AND both gentleman lived in Northern California in a city called Novi. My seatmate who was also gifted the tickets from our mutual friend, turns out to have also graduated from Fairfax High in Los Angeles! We sat and reminisced about certain things from L.A. and neighborhoods, etc. What are the odds of that? Talk about your six degrees of separation. And it crossed my mind that if had swapped seats, we might never have known the connections we all shared. But we sat in the right two seats to have connection and realize how small the world can be--how truly One we are.
ah, the magic of the diamond.
